Fallschirmjäger is the German word for paratroopers. They played an important role during WWII, when, together with the Gebirgsjäger they were perceived as the elite infantry units of the German military. After World War II, they were reconstituted as parts of postwar armed forces of both West and East Germany, mainly as special ops troops. In the modern German Bundeswehr, Fallschirmjäger continue to form the core of Special Operations. The Division has two brigade equivalents and several independent companies and battalions. All told, about 10,000 troops served in that division in 2010, most of them support or logistics personnel.

The paratrooper badge of the Bundeswehr is a special badge as a function badge, which is awarded for a certain number of jumps with a parachute from the aircraft of the Bundeswehr (e.g. the Transall or the CH-53). Jumps from other aircraft can be recognized. After successfully completing the parachutist course, participants will receive a course certificate, which is also a certificate of ownership for the special badge. Level I in bronze is awarded after passing the parachutist course at the air landing and air transport school. The parachutist badge is awarded in three stages: Level I bronze after 5 jumps. Level II silver after 20 jumps and Level III gold after 50 jumps.

Even before the introduction of unit insignia in the Bundeswehr and up to around the mid-1960s, members of the Airborne Division (and its predecessor, the 106th Airborne Brigade) were already wearing sleeve insignia. These are not unit badges, but sleeve patches to indicate membership in the airborne troops (similar to activity badges) and rank group. Similar sleeve insignia wore members of the mountain troops.

The 1st Airborne Division was the 9th Division and the only airborne division of the Bundeswehr Army. Units of the brigades were deployed throughout Germany. The tasks of the division and the leadership of the airborne brigades were re-established in 1994 from parts of the dissolved 4th Panzergrenadier Division and the 1st Airborne Division. Thus the division was de facto dissolved. The Airmobile Forces Command was in turn the nucleus of the Special Operations Division (DSO), from which the Rapid Forces Division (DSK) emerged on January 1, 2014, which today bundles the Bundeswehr's airborne forces.

Divizija za specijalne operacije, koji je ustrojena početkom 2014. preustrojem Divizije za specijalna djelovanja i uključivanjem dijelova Divizije avio-mobilnih operacija, okuplja gotovo sve zračno-desantne snage, avijaciju KoV-a i specijalne jedinice kopnene vojske. To diviziju čini ključnim nositeljem desantnih operacija kopnene vojske i operacija aeromobilnih i zračno-mehaniziranih snaga.

This makes the division a key carrier of landing operations by the army and operations by airmobile and air-mechanized forces. Due to the integrated special and specialized forces, the division is particularly qualified for special missions that do not correspond to the classic high-intensity fight against militarily organized forces. Parts of the division were temporarily classified as Bundeswehr intervention forces. The subordinate large unit best known to the public is the Special Forces Command.

Airmobile Operations Division (Division Luftbewegliche Operationen) was a division of the German Army. The division was founded on 1 July 2002 and reported for duty 8 October 2002. Airmobile Operations Division consists of approximately 14,500 soldiers, 350 of which are stationed at the divisionary headquarters in Veitshöchheim, Germany. The division itself will disband in 2014 and will be integrated into the 10th Armoured Division which will relocate from Sigmaringen to Veitshöchheim.

DIVISION PATCH
Oznaka Divizije

The coat of arms of Airmobile Operations Division depicts a flying black eagle, with its wings turned upright, holding a sword in its claws on a argent. Below the eagle a red arrow is shown. The argent symbolises dedication and the eagle strength, courage and bravery. The eagle's upturned wings, somewhat unusual in heraldry, represent the lunging out for new power. The sword stands for strike capability and penetration depth. The red arrow illustrates the third dimension, the depth of space and the dynamics of the division. The framing silver cord shows the status as a division. The maroon coloured seam corresponds with the traditional beret colour of the Army Aviation Corps and airborne forces. The division's motto is the same as the German Army Aviation Corps: „Nach vorn!“ which translates as either "Forward!" or "To the front!".
