      Osim u širem Londonu, svaka teritorijalna policija pokriva jedno ili više područja lokalne samouprave (okruga) uspostavljenih reorganizacijom lokalne uprave 1974.       Except in Greater London, each territorial police force covers one or more of the local government areas (counties) established in the 1974 local government reorganisations (although with subsequent modifications), in an area known in statute as a police area. These forces have been known historically as "Home Office police forces" due to the central government department, the Home Office, being responsible for and providing most of the funding these police forces. Despite the implication of the term, all police forces are independent, with operational control resting solely with the chief officer of each force (the chief constable or with regard to the Metropolitan Police and City of London Police forces, their respective Commissioners); each force was overseen by a Police authority until these were replaced by police and crime commissioners in 2012.

      The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is responsible for law enforcement and the prevention of crime within the ceremonial county of Greater London. The main geographical area of responsibilities, the Metropolitan Police District, consists of the 32 London boroughs, but does not include the City of LondonIn addition, it is responsible for some specialised matters throughout the United Kingdom, including national counter-terrorism measures and the protection of specific people, such as the monarch and other members of the royal family, members of the government, 164 foreign embassies, Heathrow airports Palace of Westminster, and dealing with significantly more protests and events than any other British force, with 3,500 such events in 2016. The force, by officer numbers, is the largest in the United Kingdom by a significant margin, and one of the biggest in the world.

      The City of London Police is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement within the City of London, including the Middle and Inner Temples. The force responsible for law enforcement within the remainder of the London region, outside the city, is the much larger Metropolitan Police, a separate organisation. The City of London area has a resident population of around 8,700, however there is also a daily influx of approximately 513,000 commuters into the city, along with thousands of tourists.

      The City of London Police has different ranks above Chief Superintendent: Commander (Cmdr); Assistant Commissioner (AC) and Commissioner. City of London Police insignia is gold where that of other forces is silver. For example, rank insignia and collar numbers on epaulettes are gold, as are the bands and oakleaves on the caps of senior officers, and officers of or above the rank of Commander wear gold-on-black gorget patches on the collars of their tunics.

      Thames Valley Police is the largest non-metropolitan force. It covers over 2,200 square miles and three counties: Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. They serve a diverse population of over 2.34 million people. The force has 11 local policing areas, each with a command structure led by a Superintendent. The force is also responsible for policing 196 miles of motorway. 11 local policing areas (LPAs) are: Cherwell and West Oxfordshire, Aylesbury Vale, Milton Keynes, Oxford, South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse, South Buckinghamshire, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead, Bracknell and Wokingham, Reading and West Berkshire.

      Part of the present force area was originally part of the Metropolitan Police District, and was only transferred to the control of Surrey Police from the Metropolitan Police in 2000. This includes the boroughs of Epsom and Ewell, Spelthorne and part of Reigate and Banstead and Elmbridge. Surrey Police was divided into three divisions but in 2010 became a single division, and as of March 2014 is policed by 1,938 regular police officers, in addition to 182 Special Constables and 153 Police Community Support Officers. Surrey has one of the lowest crime rates in England and Wales. It has now reverted to three area divisions.

      Sussex Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing in the whole of Sussex. The force is headquartered in Malling House, Lewes, East Sussex and covers the ceremonial counties of East Sussex and West Sussex. The force consists of three divisions, each being led by a chief superintendent: West Sussex, East Sussex, and Brighton & Hove. Divisions are sub-divided into districts, each led by a chief inspector, providing a local identity for policing. These districts are Chichester, Arun, Horsham, Adur & Worthing, Crawley, Mid Sussex, Brighton & Hove, Wealden, Lewes, Eastbourne, Rother and Hastings. Sussex Police is also responsible for policing Gatwick Airport.

      Kent Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing the 1,433 sq mi (3,710 km2) and approximately 1.8 million inhabitants of Kent, a county in South East England. In 2010, it was decided the force's six BCUs would be reduced to three: North Division: North Kent district (Dartford district, Gravesham district, Medway district, Swale district); East Division: (Canterbury district, Thanet district, Dover district, Ashford district, Folkestone and Hythe district) and West Division (Maidstone district, Tunbridge Wells district, Tonbridge and Malling district, Sevenoaks district).

      The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is the territorial police force responsible for policing the counties of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in South East England. The force area includes Southampton, the largest city in South East England, and the naval city of Portsmouth. It also covers the New Forest National Park, sections of the South Downs National Park, large towns such as Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Andover, Fareham and Aldershot, and the historic city of Winchester. The constabulary, as it is currently constituted, dates from 1967, but modern policing in Hampshire can be traced back to 1832.

      Male constables and sergeants of Hampshire Constabulary wear the traditional comb-style custodian helmet when on foot patrol. However, Hampshire is one of only three other UK forces that does not use the common Brunswick star style force badge, favoring instead a large metal plate that mirrors the county crest, depicting a laurel wreath enclosing a crowned rose above a banner that reads 'Hampshire'.

As of March 2019, the force consists of over 1,900 police officers, 235 PCSOs, over 1500 police staff, as well as being supported by more than 410 special constables.  It was in 2000 that the current force boundaries came into place with the addition of Hertsmere and Broxbourne, transferred from the Metropolitan Police.

      Bedfordshire Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire in England, which includes the unitary authorities of Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and Luton. Its headquarters are in the town of Kempston in Bedford Borough. As of September 2020, the force has 1,317 police officers, 151 special constables, and 1,084 staff. It covers an area of 477 square miles (1,240 km2), with a population of 665,000. Bedfordshire Police has collaborated in the formation of several specialist units with Hertfordshire Constabulary and Cambridgeshire Constabulary including Major Crime, Dogs, Firearms and Roads Policing.

      Essex Police is a territorial police force responsible for policing the county of Essex, in the East of England. Essex Police is responsible for a population of over 1.8 million people and an area of 1,420 square miles (3,700 km2). Essex and Kent Police share support services, such as administration, fleet and a Serious Crime Directorate (SCD). The collaboration between them began in 2007. Essex Police in 2000 took over parts of the county in the south-west (Loughton, Waltham Abbey, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill) formerly in the Metropolitan Police Area.

The force of Cambridgeshire includes the cities of Cambridge, Ely and Peterborough, the market towns of Chatteris, Huntingdon, March, Ramsey, St Ives, St Neots, Whittlesey, and town and Port of Wisbech. Its emblem is a crowned Brunswick star containing the heraldic badge of Cambridgeshire County Council.

Headquartered in Martlesham, Suffolk is responsible for Ipswich, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Felixstowe. As of September 2022, the force has a strength of approximately 1,387 police constables, and as of March 2022, 111 special constables, 880 police staff/designated officers, 36 PCSO's and 133 police support volunteers.

Headquartered in Wymondham, Norfolk is responsible for the City of Norwich, along with King's Lynn, Great Yarmouth and Thetford. As of September 2022, the force has a strength of 1,921 police constables, and as of March 2022, 179 special constables, 1,226 police staff/designated officers, and 100 police support volunteers.
