      U francuskoj je Nacionalna Žandarmerija (Francuski: Gendarmerie nationale) grana Oružanih snaga, sa zadaćom održavanja javne sigurnosti, to jest vrši policijske dužnosti među civilnim stanovništvom. Istovremeno ima u svojem sastavu i vojnu policiju kao i jedinice za specijalne operacije (GIGN). 2011. godine u svojim je redovima imala 98.155 pripadnika. U radu surađuje sa Nacionalnom policijom i od 2009. godine, iako dio vojske, dolazi pod nadležnost Ministarstva unutrašnjih poslova (kako po pitanju budžeta tako i po operacijama koje izvodi).

      In France, the National Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie nationale) is a branch of the French Armed Forces, in chare of public safety, with police duties among the civilian population. It also contains a military police force and a special forces component (GIGN). It has a strength of more than 98,155 personnel in 2011. The Gendarmerie works with the other national law enforcement agency, the Police Nationale, and from 2009, although it is a part of the armed forces establishment, it is now a part of the Ministry of the Interior as its military component and forms part of its operations and budget. It is mandated to fulfill national security duties and duties in support of its parent ministry.

AIR GENDARMERIE  ŽANDARMERIJA AVIJACIJE

      Žandarmerija avijacije (francuski: Gendarmerie de l'Air) je jedinica Francuske nacionalne žandarmerije koja djeluje kao vojna policija (provost) unutar Francuskih zračnih snaga (vojska). Oznaku lijevo koriste žandarmi u sastavu francuske vojske stacionirani u Njemačkoj.

      The Air Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie de l'Air) are a unit of the French Gendarmerie responsible for provost (military police) functions within the French Air Force. Insignia on the left is in use by Gendarmerie members of French Armed Forces stationed in Germany.

AIR TRANSPORT GENDARMERIE  ŽANDARMERIJA TRANSPORTNE AVIJACIJE

      Žandarmerija transportne avijacije (Gendarmerie des Transports Aériens) je grana Francuske nacionalne žandarmerije pod "dvojnom" komandom: žandarmerije i Direkcije za civilnu avijaciju unutar Ministarstva transporta. Njene zadaće uključuju: vršenje policijskih dužnosti i održavanje sigurnosti na civilnim aerodromima i uzletištima, kontrola ulaska u letjelice, protuterorističke aktivnosti, suzbijanje krijumčarenja opojnih droga, nadzor tereta, nadzor nad tehničkim instalacijama na aerodromima (npr. kontrolnih tornjeva itd...), kontrola prometa na cestama unutar aerodroma, zaštita važnih osoba, vršenje istraga povezanih sa nesrećama civilnih aviona itd.

      The Air Transport Gendarmerie (Gendarmerie des Transports Aériens) is a branch of the French Gendarmerie placed under the dual supervision of the Gendarmerie and the Direction of Civilian Aviation of the Transportation Ministry. Its missions include: police and security in civilian airfields and airports, filtering access to aircraft, counter-terrorism and counter-narcotic activities, freight surveillance, surveillance of technical installations of the airports (control towers etc.), traffic control on the roads within the airports, protection of important visitors, stopping for a layover and judiciary inquiries pertaining to accidents of civilian aircraft.

MARITIME GENDARMERIE   POMORSKA ŽANDARMERIJA

      Pomorska žandarmerija (Gendarmerie Maritime) je sastavni dio Francuske nacionalne žandarmerije pod opertivnom kontrolom načelnika štaba francuske ratne mornarice. Zapošljavaju oko 1100 žandarma koji koriste oko trideset patrolnih čamaca i brzih motornih brodova raspoređenih po plovnim putevima Francuske. Kao i njihove "kopnene" kolege, pomorski žandari su vojno osoblje koje uz svoju primarnu ulogu obalne straže vrše civilne policijske dužnosti, kao i dužnosti pomorske policije francuske moranrice.

      Uniforme i oznake koje koristi pomorska žandarmerija su vrlo slične onima koje upotrebljavaju pripadnici mornarice, ali su činovi na uniformama isti kao i kod drugih žandara (znači isti kao tradicionalni činovi francuske konjice).

      The Maritime Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie Maritime) is a component of the French National Gendarmerie under operational control of the chief of staff of the French Navy. It employs 1,100 personnel and operates around thirty patrol boats and high-speed motorboats distributed on the littoral waterways of France. Like their land-based colleagues the Gendarmes Maritime are military personnel carry out policing operations in addition to their primary role as a coast guard unit. They also carry out provost duties within the French Navy.

      The uniforms and insignia of the Gendarmerie Maritime are very similar to those of the French Navy, but the ranks used are those of the rest of the Gendarmerie (which are the same as the traditional ranks of the French Cavalry).

REPUBLICAN GUARD   REPUBLIKANSKA GARDA

      Republikanska garda (Garde républicaine) je dio žandarmerije odgovoran za sigurnost u pariškoj regiji te za vršenje ceremonijalnih dužnosti. Njihove dužnosti uključuju čuvanje važnijih institucija u parizu kao na primjer rezidenciju Predsjednika Francuske Republike (Élyséé Palace), rezidenciju francuskog Premijera (Hôtel Matignon), Senat (Palais du Luxembourg), Narodnu skupštinu (Paalais Burbon), Palaču pravde te održavanje reda unutar granica Pariza. Uz to imaju i cijeli niz drugih zadataka, kao na primjer: Počasna straža i osiguranje VIP osoba (domaćih i stranih), pomaganje ostalim policijskim službama u svojoj regiji (svojim interventnim grupama, konjičkim patrolama i slično), popunjavanjem konjičkih policijskih stanica (pogotovo onih u šumskoj Île-de-France regiji), prevozom organa za transplantaciju itd... Jedna od važnijih uloga im je i predstavljanje zemlje na međunarodnim susretima te primanje važnijih gostiju u zemlji.    

      Republikanska garda broji 3200 pripadnika raspoređenih u dvije pješadijske i jednu konjičku regimentu. U jednoj od pješadijskih regimenti je i motociklistički skvadron. Imaju i četiri muziče formacije te konjičke i motociklističke jedinice koje pokazuju svoje posebne sposobnosti pred posebnim gostima ili u raznim svečanim prilikama. Republikanskom gardom komandira oficir u činu pukovnika (sa svojim štabom).

      The Republican Guard (French: Garde républicaine) is part of the French Gendarmerie. It is responsible for providing security in the Paris area and for providing guards of honor. Its missions include: guarding important public buildings in Paris such as the Élyséé Palace (the residence of the President of the French Republic), the Hôtel Matignon (the residence of the Prime Minister of France), the Palais du Luxembourg (the Senate), the Paalais Burbon (the National Assembly), the Hall of Justice, and keeping public order in Paris. With this duties Guard gives honor and security services for the highest national personalities and important foreign guests; support of other law enforcement forces (with intervention groups, or horseback patrols); staffing horseback patrol stations, particularly for the forests of the Île-de-France region and transporting and escorting urgent organ transplants. The Republican Guard also fulfills an important diplomatic role, representing France at international events abroad and receiving important dignitaries at home.

      The Republican Guard have 3200 men and and consists from two infantry regiments (one includes a motorcycle squadron) and a horse cavlary regiment. It also has four musical formations, as well as groups that demonstrate their skills in horseback or motorcycle maneuvers. The regiment is commanded by a colonel and his staff.

      Ovlasti za izvršenje pravog hapšenja, nadgledanje pretraga određenih od strane suda i slično su ograničene na pripadnike policije i žandarmerije sa kvalifikacijama "službenika pravne policije" (officier de police judiciaire, skraćenica OPJ). Ostali policijski i žandarmerijski službenici su "samo" "agenti pravne policije" (agents de police judiciaire or APJ) i imaju ograničene ovlasti, limitirane na pomaganje ovlaštenim osobama. Međutim, agenti mogu i sami, bez nadzora ovlaštenih osoba vršiti saslušanja, voditi zapisnike ispitivanja ili intervencija.

      The powers of making a full arrest, overseeing searches ordered by the judiciary, etc., are restricted to members of the police or the gendarmerie with the qualification of "officer of judiciary police" (officier de police judiciaire or OPJ). Other officers are only "agents of judiciary police" (agents de police judiciaire or APJ) and have only limited authority, restricted to assisting the officers. However, they can, without the supervision of an OPJ, hearing people and write minutes of interrogations or interventions.
