      The Departmental Gendarmerie (French: Gendarmerie Départementale) is the territorial police branch of the French Gendarmerie. The departmental gendarmerie has regular contact with the population and conducts local policing functions throughout the French territory. The Departmental Gendarmerie is sometimes called "La Blanche" after the colour of the silver/white unit and rank insignia they wear in contrast to the golden insignia of the Mobile Gendarmerie. In France white or silver insignia traditionally indicates a mounted arm and the white insignia evolved from the gendarmerie's origins as a predominantly mounted force. Its territorial divisions are based on the administrative divisions of France, particularly the departments from which the Departmental Gendarmerie derives its name.

      Regionalna žandarmerija (Gendarmerie Départementale) je raspoređena po REGIJAMA (obrambenim zonama, kojima komandira general). Regije se dijele na LEGIJE (zapovjeda im pukovnik, po jedna za svaku od 26 administrativnih zona), a legije se dalje dijele na GRUPE (po jedna za svaki od 100 departmana, odatle im i ime). Grupe se sastoje od ČETA (po jedna za svaki od 342 okruga). Ove čete su sastavljene od "brigada".

      Departmental Gendarmerie is divided into regions (headed by a general, one for each defense zone), regions divided into legions (headed by a colonel, one for each of the 26 administrative region), legions divided into groupements (one for each of the 100 département, thus the name), groupements divided into compagnies (one for each of the 342 arrondissements).

      Osnovna jedinica žandarmerije je "brigada" koja broji od 6 do 40 pripadnika. Brigade su organizirane u grupe, ali postoje i samostalne brigade. Svaka brigada je zadužena za jednu ili više zajednica (općina, sela itd...), pa je tako svaki hijerarhijski nivo žandarmerije povezan sa lokalnom zajednicom "iste" hijerarhijske razine. Sveukupno žandarmerija ima oko 3600 brigada!

      The basic organization is the gendarmerie squad "brigade", which includes from 6 to 40 people, and are generally located at the level of the canton. The brigades can be organized in groups of brigades with a unit of chief town and brigades of proximity or in autonomous brigades. Each brigade is in charge of the monitoring one or several communes, thus, each hierarchical level of the departmental gendarmerie corresponds to a level of the administration of the territory. There are approximately 3.600 brigades.

SURVAILANCE AND INTERVENTION PLATOON  VOD ZA NADZOR I INTERVENCIJE

      Kao dodatna pomoć brigadama, žandarmerija po departmanima ima i specijalizirane jedinice nazvane "Grupe za nadzor i intervencije" (Peloton de Surveillance et d'Intervention  (PSIG)). Ljudstvo ovih jedinica je regrutirano iz četa departmanske žandarmerije. Služe kao ispomoć brigadama, bilo povećavanjem broja patrola na ulicama bilo intervencijama u slučajevima potrebe, kao npr. u potrazi za kriminalcima. Općenito uzevši, svaki distrikt ima svoju jedinicu za nadzor i intervencije.

      In addition to the brigades, the departmental gendarmerie contain units specialized in certain missions: The groups of monitoring and intervention of gendarmerie (PSIG), gathered within the Companies of Departmental Gendarmerie provide patrols which intervene and reinforce the brigades. These units either increase the number of patrols in the streets, or search for criminals etc. In general, one finds a PSIG by each district.
