      Odjel mirovnih operacija DPKO (Department of Peacekeeping Operations) svoje korjene ima u 1948. godini sa uspostavljanjem misije UNMOGIP i UNTSO. Sve do kasnih osamdesetih, mirovne misije su vođene od strane šestorice službenika UN-ovog Ureda za specijalne političke događaje. Od samog početka, mirovne misije se vode klasičnom doktrinom vođena mirovnih operacija kad nastupi prekid vatre među zaraćenim stranama. Miroven snage ne zauzimaju strane, ne učestvuju u borbama (osim u samoobrani) i ne mješaju se u politiku. Službeno je ured DPKO-a stvoren 1992. godine, kada je Boutros-Boutros Ghali postao Generalni sekretar UN-a. Jedna od prvih njegovih odluka je bila i ova o kreiranju DPKO ureda. Na čelo DPKO-a staje Goulding kao generalni-podekretar (under-secretary-general, skraćeno USG), a njegovim zamjenikom je imenovan Kofi Annan.

      Polovinom 1992. Boutros-Boutros Ghali donosi plan o jačanju kapaciteta za preventivnu diplomaciju i mirovne operacije, nazvan rad za mir (An Agenda For Peace). Djelovi DPKO-a su odjeli deminiranja, obuke, "bolje prakse" te vojni i policijski odjeli. Početkom 2007. godine Generalna skupština UN-a donosi rezoluciju o Jačanju kapaciteta Organizacije za mirovne operacije (“Strengthening the capacity of the Organization in Peacekeeping Operations”) kojom se poziva na restrukturiranje odjela i za uspostavu posebnog Odjela za podršku na terenu (Field Support). Ova se reorganizacija odvija paralelno sa reformom DPKO-a započetom 2005. nazviva "Mirovne operacije 2010", koja produbljuje reforme inicirane Izvještajem sa sjednice o mirovnim operacijama UN-a, takozvanim "Brahimi izvještajem" (Brahimi Report).

      Švedska ima dugu tradiciju učešća u mirovnim misijama UN-a. Podrška mirovnim misijama sežee u daleku 1948. godinu, kada su poslani prvi vojni promatrači na Bliski Istok. Prvi švedski vojni kontingent pod UN-ovom zastavom je raspoređen u Gazi 1956. Šezdestih godina 20. stoljeća nordijske zemlje koordiniraju svoje aktivnosti u mirovnim misijama. Osnove SWDINT-a su uspostavljene 1961 godine. UN odjel Štaba Oružanih snaga je zadužen za planiranje, organizaciju i provođenje UN operacija za koje je Vlada odučila da će švedske snage učestvovati. 1984 godine spajaju se svi odjeli ua obuka u UN školu Oružanih snaga (FSN). Odlukom švedskog Parlamenta s ovim se Centrom spaja i UN-ov odjel Štaba OS-a.

      Sweden has a long tradition in Peace Support Operations (PSO). Contribution to the United Nations started as early as 1948 when Military Observers were sent to the Middle East. The first Swedish battalion under UN-flag was deployed in Gaza 1956. During the 1960s the Nordic countries agreed to coordinate their activities in the field of peacekeeping training. The foundations of SWEDINT were laid in 1961. The UN department of the Army Staff dealt with the planning, organisation, and execution of UN operations in which the Swedish government decided that Sweden should participate. In 1984 all UN training was brought together at the Armed Forces UN School (FNS).  The UN department was merged with the Armed Forces UN School in 1991 following a decision by the Swedish parliament.

      The DPKO traces its roots to 1948 with the creation of the UNMOGIP and UNTSO. Up to the late 1980s, peacekeeping missions were operated by six officials in the United Nations Office of Special Political Affairs. From the beginning, peacekeeping operations operated with a clear doctrine that applied to its traditional or classical peacekeeping operations for inter-state ceasefires: peacekeepers did not take sides or discharge firearms, save in self-defense, or meddle in politics. The official DPKO was created in 1992 when Boutros-Boutros Ghali took office as Secretary-General of the United Nations; its creation was one of his first decisions. Goulding became under-secretary-general (or USG) for peacekeeping with Kofi Annan appointed as his deputy. The role of the DPKO, however, wasn't clarified until June 1992, when Boutrous-Ghali issued a plan to strengthen the UN's capacity for preventative diplomacy and peacekeeping, entitled An Agenda For Peace. Also part of DPKO are Mine Action, Training, Best Practices, and Military and Police Divisions.

      A March 2007 United Nations General Assembly Resolution titled “Strengthening the capacity of the Organization in Peacekeeping Operations” has called for the re-structuring of the department and the establishment of a separate Department of Field Support. This re-organisation was paralleled by a DPKO reform effort launched in 2005 entitled 'Peace Operations 2010', which further pursues reforms initiated by the 'Brahimi Report' Report of the Panel on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.
