      Nacionalna policija Španjolske je uglavnom gradska policijska služba. Nalazi se pod direktnom upravom Ministarstva unutrašnjih poslova. Bore se protiv kriminala, terorizma, ilegalne imigracije te pravosuđem. Postoje tri regije u Španjolskoj gdje su ovlasti nacionalne policije ograničene: Baskiji gdje to obavlja Ertzaintza (Baskijska autonomna policija) te Kataloniji gdje to rade Mossos d'Esquadra. Nacionalna policija jedina ima pravo: izdavati osobne dokumente (osobne iskaznice i pasoše), kontrolirati ulazak i izlazak iz zemlje, primjena imigracijskih zakona, izbjeglice i azilante, ekstradikcije i protjerivanja iz zemlje, borba protiv droge, suradnja sa ostalim policijskim agencijama putem Interpola i Europola, kontrola privatnih zaštitarskih firmi, te ostale zadaće određene španjolskim zakonima.

      Cuerpo Nacional de Policía, ("National Police Forces") is the countrywide urban police agency of Spain. These forces are under the sole authority of Spain's Ministry of the Interior. They handle criminal, judicial, terrorism and immigration matters mostly. However, these forces have limited deployment and competencies in the Basque Country and Catalonia territories, where Ertzaintza (Basque autonomous police) and Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan autonomous police) respectively, handle most matters. National Police exclusive duties are: issuing of Identity document Spain DNI “IDs” and passports; to control receipts and outgoings of the foreign people and Spaniards, immigration law, refuge and asylum, extradition and expulsion, to watch the rules about games and gambling, investigation and chasing drug crimes, collaborate and help to other countries police through Interpol and Europol, to control private security companies and anything to be in force in spanish laws.

     Da bi osoba postala pripadnik nacionalne policije mora biti španjolski državljanin, stariji od 18 i mlađi od 30 godina, za muškarce minimalna visina 165, a za žene 160 cm, da nije protivnik nošenja oružja i da je spremna koristi ga u zakonom određenim situacijama, da nije kažnjavana te da nije bila izbačen iz neke od državnih institucija, da ima vozačku dozvolu kategorije navedene u natječaju. Izabrani kandidati zatim šest mjeseci pohađaju policijsku akademiju u Avili. Nakon te osnovne obuke koja među ostalim sadrži učenje španjolskih zakona, obuka u korištenju naoružanja, borilačkih vještina, engleskog jezika, tehnike krim istraga, kadeti tri mjeseca u "kabinetu prakse" vježbaju korištenje stečenih znanja u situacijama koje ih mogu zadesiti u službi.

After that, the applicant will have the "aula practica", that mixes theoretical knowledges with practical situations for three months. Finally, the cadet will recive a policing practices, in which, there will have all kinds of common situations that will be forming him as agent.

      Nadimak za koji je „zaslužna“ smeđa boja starih uniformi je „la madera“/“los maderos“ (drvo ili balvan). Među simpatizerima baskijske teroritičke organizacije ETA, pripadnici Nacionalne policije su nazivani „txakurrak“  (baskijski za „psi“).

      Nicknames: earlier uniform was brown, leading to their nickname la madera/los maderos ("the wood"/"the logs"). Among supporters of the violent Basque terrorist organization ETA, Policía Nacional is loathed as txakurrak (Basque for "the dogs").
