Niži činovi imaju različite boje širita, ovisno o jedinicama u kojima služe, naprimjer jedinice stacionirane u Francuskoj (Troupes métropolitaines ("native French")) imaju plave, mornarička pješadija (Troups de marine) ima crvene, legionari zelene itd... Takođe postoje i razlike koje označavaju razliku između vojnih obveznika (regruta) i dobrovoljaca. Osim toga na činovima se vide i oznake vremena provedenog u vojsci (jedna crtica za pet godina, na činu ih može biti do četiri). Viši vojnički činovi imaju isti sistem kao i oficiri, „zlatne“ za pješadiju i jedinice podrške te „srebreni“ za konjicu i tehničke službe. Niži činovi su: Vojnik, Vojnik prve klase, kaplar, kaplar-šef, Kaplar-šef prve klase.

      Junior enlisted grades have different cloth stripe and beret colour depending on the service they are assigned to. Troupes métropolitaines ("native French") units wear blue, Troupes de marine (the former troupes coloniale) wear red, and the Legion Etrangere (as members of the former Armée d'Afrique) units wear green. There are also distinctions to distinguish volunteers and conscripts, and bars for experience (one for five years, up to four can be obtained). Senior grades' lace stripe metal depends on their arm of service, just like the officiers.       Šef ađutant ("Adjudant-chef" engleski "Chief adjutant") često ima iste odgovornosti kao poručnik. U konjici i transportnim jedinicama osobe sa ovim činom oslovljavaju sa poručniče, a u ostalim granama i rodovima sa "adjudant-chef".

      Adjudant-chef: "Chief adjutant"; often have same responsibilities as the lieutenant. In the cavalry and transportation arms, they are addressed as "lieutenant", otherwise addressed as "adjudant-chef".

STAFF WARRANT OFFICER  STARIJI ZASTAVNIK Major

      Korijen naziva Major, najvećeg podoficirskog čina, dolazi od francuskog pojma: chef d'etat major;  (šef štaba, engleski "chief of staff"). Kao i njemački Feldwebel-Leutnant, major je bio čin osobe zadužene za vođenje knjigovodstva. Od 01. 01. 2009. ovaj čin se prebacuje u podoficrske činove. Do tada su ađutanti bili nešto između oficira i podoficira (warrant officers). Ovo je relativno rijedak čin, jer postoje uglavnom po jedan u regimenti ili brigadi. Interesantno je da je čin major u najvećem broju vojski svijeta oficirski, iznad kapetana.

      Major, the senior sub-officer rank, is derived from the term chef d'etat major (English: "chief of staff"). Much like the German army rank of Feldwebel-Leutnant (English: "sergeant-lieutenant"), the major was a staff warrant officer in charge of book-keeping and paperwork. Since 1 January 2009 this grade is attached to the sous-officiers. Prior to this date it was an independent corps between the sous-officiers and the officiers. There are relatively few majors in the army, about one per regiment or brigade. As they could hold equivalent administrative tasks as officiers they are more common in the Armée de l'Air. Note the difference with many rank systems where majors rank above captaines.

      Izgled činova kadeta oficira varira od roda vojske. Kod kopnene vojske takođe postoje varijacije, ovisno o kojoj se školi (akademiji) radi.  Činovi su podjeljeni po godinama: 1. godina oficir kadet (Élève-officier), 2. godina čin aspirant (Aspirant) i na 3. godini čin potporučnika (Sous-lieutenant).

      The rank badges for officer cadets vary by military. For the Army, badges differ depending on the Officer Training School considered. Ranks are: 1st year: officer cadet rank (Élève-officier), 2nd year: aspirant rank (Aspirant) and 3rd year: rank of second lieutenant (Sous-lieutenant).

      Francuski studenti koji pristupe Saint-Cyru (École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr) su u dobi od dvadeset i jedne godine i prolaze trogodišnje školovanje iI obuku. Svi kadeti koji uspješno završe školovanje dobijaju zvanje magistra društvenih ili tehničkih znanosti te postaju oficiri. 

      French students who enter Saint-Cyr as cadets are about 21 years old, and undergo three years of training. All ESM cadets graduate with a master of arts or a master of science and are commissioned officers.

      Potpukovnik ima iste odgovornosti kao i pukovnik. Potpukovnik je onaj koji može "zauzeti mjesto" pukovnika (lieu-tenant, tenir lieu = zauzeti mjesto). Nazivani su majorom za vrijeme Prvog francuskog carstva. Za razliku od pukovnika koji ima „jednobojne“ činove, kod potpukovnika se izmjenjuju bijela i žuta. Ovo svojstvo seže barem do naizmjeničnih pruga na kapama u doba tog carstva.

      The lieutenant-colonel has the same responsibilities as a colonel. Lieutenant-colonel is the one who can "take the place" of a colonel (lieu-tenant, tenir lieu = to take the place of). They were called major during the First French Empire. Notice that the metal colours alternate silver and gold in each case, as opposed to those of the colonels. This characteristic goes back at least to alternating stripes on the headdress of that empire.

COLONEL  PUKOVNIK  Colonel

      Riječ colonel (pukovnik) ima korijen u tituli „capitaine colonel“, onaj koji komandira colonom (pukom, regimentom). U kopnenoj vojsci pukovnik komandira regimentom, a u žandarmeriji „groupement“-om. Razlika u boji širita na epoletama označava pripadnike pješadije (zlatna) i konjice (srebrena). Naravno da to nije sve tako jednostavno, jer artiljerci, kao i spahije koriste zlatnu boju i ako su dio konjice. Tom razlikom u boji označavaju da su dio oklopnih jedinica. Pod pješaduju se računaju: Pješadija, Legija stranaca, Mornarička pješadija, Inžinjerija itd, a pod konjičke jedinice: Oklopne, transportne, artiljerijske jedinice, održavanje i logistika.

      The word colonel originates in the title capitaine colonel, "the one who commands a column" (regiment). A colonel commands a regiment of the army or a groupement of the Gendarmerie. Cavalry arms wear silver. The origin of the difference in metal colour is that infantry officers once wore silver epaulettes, while those of the cavalry and other arms wore gold, and the colour of the rank badge had to differ from these metals in each case. However, the artillery uses gold as the main colour, despite being a cavalry branch, and spahis use gold as the main colour despite being part of the cavalry, a division representing the armored cavalry.
