ENSIGN

      Ovo je najniži oficirski čin, dodijeljen nakon završetka školovanja u Mornaričkoj vojnoj akademiji, Tečaju za rezervne mornaričke oficire te Oficirskoj školi itd... Uglavnom, većina zastavnika su još na obuci za svoje buduće specijalnosti u Mornarici, dok dio već služi na brodovima.

      The initial Commissioned Officer rank held by graduates of the United States Naval Academy (USNA), Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC), Officer Candidate School (OCS) and other commissioning sources. Generally, most Ensigns are in various schools training for their respective warfare or staff specialties. Others, serving in the Fleet, are Division Officers.

LIEUTENANT JUNIOR GRADE

      Napredovanje u ovaj čin slijedi nakon otprilike dvije godine u službi u činu Zastavnika. Neki od njih još uvijek mogu biti na obuci za svoju buduću specijalnost. Ostali služe u floti.

      Promotion occurs approximately two years after commissioning as an Ensign. Some officers may still be in schools training for their warfare or staff specialty. Others may be serving in the Fleet as Division Officers.

LIEUTENANT

      Poručnici služe kao šefovi službi (odjela) na manjim brodovima, u avijacijskim eskadrilama, podmornicama i brodovima. U nekim Komandama, stariji poručnici su i komandiri službi. U mornaričkim specijalcima (Navy SEAL teams) poručnici, mlađi poručnici i zastavnici služe kao komandiri voda.

      Usually a Division Officer or service head on some smaller ships, in aircraft squadrons, submarines, and ships, Lieutenants serve as Division Officers. In some commands, senior LT are Department Heads. FOr SEAL Teams, LT, LTJGs and ENS serve as Platoon Leaders.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER

      Šef odjela ili izvršni oficir na brodu, avio eskadrili ili podmornici. U SEAL timovima su komandiri. Neki sa ovim činom zapovjedaju minolovcem ili patrolnim čamcima.

      A Department Head or Executive Officer on a ship, aircraft squadron, or submarine. On SEAL Teams LCDR serve as Executive Officers. Some officers serve as a Commanding Officer of a Minesweeper or a Patrol Craft.

COMMANDER

      Pripada starijim oficirskim činovima i može zapovijedati fregatom, razaračem, brzom napadačkom podmornicom, manjim amfibijskim brodom, avijacijskom eskadrilom, SEAL timom ili nekim posadama na kopnu.

      A Senior Officer, a CDR may command a Frigate, Destroyer, Fast Attack Submarine, Smaller Amphibious Ship, Aviation Squadron, SEAL Team, or shore installation.

CAPTAIN

      Služi kao komandni oficir u višim komandama, kao što su nosači aviona, amfibijski jurišni brodovi, razarači, podmornicama sa balističkim projektilima, grupama podmornica, grupama SEAL specijalaca i većim kopnenim postrojenjima.

      Serves as Commanding Officers of Major Commands such as Aircraft Carriers, Amphibious Assault Ships, Cruisers, Destroyer Squadrons, Carrier Air Wings, Ballistic Missile Submarines, Submarine Squadrons, SEAL Groups and major shore installations.

REAR ADMIRAL LOWER HALF

      A one-star rank, it is the first of the Flag Ranks. At sea commands include commanding an Amphibious Group, Carrier-Cruiser Group, Carrier or Expeditionary Strike Group. Flag Officers also may be assigned as deputies to larger commands.

REAR ADMIRAL

      Čin sa dvije zvijezde. Na moru može zapovjedati amfibijskom grupom, grupom nosača i razarača ili nosačem ekspedicione udarne grupe. Mogu biti postavljeni i kao zamjenici u višim komandama.

      A two-star rank. At sea commands include commanding an Amphibious Group, Carrier-Cruiser Group, Carrier or Expeditionary Strike Group. Flag Officers also may be assigned as deputies to larger commands.

VICE ADMIRAL

      Čin sa tri zvijezde. Vice admiral komandira flotom ili je postavljen na mjesto zamjenika u regionalnoj komandi.

      A three-star rank. Commands numbered fleets, holds positions as deputies for regional commands.

ADMIRAL

      To je najstariji komandni čin. Admirale se postavlja na mjesta zapovjednika Regionalnoh komandi, Združenih komandi, za šefove pomorskih operacija i predsjednika Zajedničkog generalštaba (Joint Chiefs of Staff).

      The most senior Flag Rank. Assignments for Admirals include Commanders of Regional Commands, Joint Commands, Chief of Naval Operations, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

FLEET ADMIRAL

      Čin koji se dodjeljuje isključivo u ratno doba i nije dodjeljivan od vremena Drugog svjetskog rata kada je pet zvijezdica bilo dodijeljeno Williamu D. Leahy, Ernestu King, Chesteru Nimitz i Williamu Halsey.

      A war-time designation that has not been assigned since World War II when five stars were awarded to William D. Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz and William Halsey.

ABOUT RANKS  O ČINOVIMA

      Navy officers wear their rank devices in different places on their uniforms, depending upon the uniform. The three basic uniforms and the type of rank devices are: khakis (a working uniform) - pins on the collar; whites - stripes on shoulder boards; and, blues - stripes sewn on the lower sleeve. Shoulder boards are also worn on bridge coats and reefers. The collar devices are also worn on the right side of the garrison cap (a miniature officer's crest is worn on the left) and slightly larger devices are worn on the epaulets of the raincoat and working jacket. Additionally, line officers wear a star above the stripes of the shoulder boards or sleeves but staff and warrant officers wear specialty insignia.
