The Border Guard (PS) was a Czechoslovak armed unit that was in charge of guarding and controlling the state border. It was established in accordance with the Act on the Protection of State Borders. Its organizational integration has changed several times, the longest falling under the Ministry of the Interior (most recently from 1972 until its abolition in 1990). Its activities did not affect economic cross-border crime (the customs guard was in charge of it), but monitored the movement of people around the state border. It developed its activities most sharply on the section of the border with Germany and Austria, where a fence, the so-called Iron Curtain, was built.
