Metropolitanska policija Distrikta Columbia (Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia) formirana je 1861. godine po nalogu Kongresa SAD-a. Danas je MPD jedna od deset najvećih loklanih policijskih službi u Sjedinjenim Državama Amerike. Prednjače i po suradnji sa stanovnicima distrikta i po upotrebi moderne tehnologije. MPD je organiziran u šest odjela koji pružaju usluge kao što su patroliranje, istrage, unutrašnji poslovi, domovinska sigurnost, strateške službe i druge. Unutar Districta postoji sedam policijskih distrikta koji su dalje podijeljeni na policijske zone.       The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, was formed in 1861 by an act of the United States Congress. Today the MPD is one of the ten largest local police departments in the United States and is at the forefront of providing police services to the District through community policing and modern technology. The MPD is organized into six bureaus that provide services including Patrol, Investigations, Internal Affairs, Homeland Security, Strategic Services, and Corporate Support. Within the city, the MPD patrol seven police districts which are further divided into Police Service Areas.

      Predsjednik Ford je 04. 06. 1976.godine potpisao Zakon, predložen od strane Kongresa, o uspostavi Metropolitanske prometne policije (the Metro Transit Police Department MTPD). Oni su jedina policijska agencija koja ima pune ovlasti za provođenje zakona unutar tri različite jurisdikcije: Maryland-a, Virginie i Distrikta Columbia. Imaju 490 policajaca, 64 pripadnika specijalne zaštitne policije te 91 civilnog službenika.  Policajci MTPD-a su zaduženi za provođenje cijele palete zakona na prometnicama u široj okolini Washingtona, što uključuje podzemnu željeznicu i sve vrste javnog autobusnog prevoza.

      On June 4, 1976, President Ford signed into law a bill passed by Congress authorizing the establishment of the Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD). MTPD police officers have tri-state jurisdiction with responsibility for a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions in transit facilities throughout the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. The MTPD is unique in U.S. law enforcement as it is the only U.S. police agency that has full local police authority in three different jurisdictions: Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia.  MTPD has an authorized strength of 490 sworn police officers, 64 security special police, and 91 civilian personnel. Officers provide a variety of law enforcement and public safety services on the Metrorail and Metrobus systems in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
