Militia (lat.), organ of the Secretariat of Internal Affairs of the socio-political communities of the SFRY. Its task is to directly protect the lives and personal freedom of citizens, social and personal property, maintain public order and peace and public security, prevent disruption of social order, detect criminal acts and their perpetrators, and ensure the execution of other tasks determined by law or regulations adopted on the basis of law. It is armed, equipped with the necessary technical means and uniformed. The organization of the militia and its workers are aligned with social self-management. It is organized into organizational and formational units: departments, stations, platoons, companies, battalions, detachments and militia brigades. In peacetime, it closely cooperates with the bodies of the JNA and the military police, and in wartime it is an integral part of the territorial defense of the SFRY. There are special school institutions for the training of militia personnel. The militia was established during the NOR in the liberated and semi-liberated areas under the NOO or local commands, under different names: partisan guard, village guard, national protection, etc. From 1944, it was called the People's Militia (Narodna milicija), and from 1966, the Militia (Milicija).
