Krilati lav sv.

The AMF-L was intended as a multinational force that could be quickly despatched to any part of ACE’s command area - from North Norway, to Germany, to eastern Turkey - to demonstrate the solidarity of the alliance and its ability to resist all forms of aggression against any member state. During the Cold War the AMF-L did frequent exercises in North Norway (Exercises Adventure Express, Arctic Express & Ardent Ground, among others) and in other areas, but was first deployed operationally in 1991 during the Gulf War, when part of its air component was despatched to watch the Turkish borders, in the face of a potential threat to a member’s territory. The land component of the force, consisting of a brigade-sized formation of about 5,000 personnel, was composed of units from 14 NATO states.

The insignia of Allied Forces Northwestern Europe is a green shield displaying the  following devices: an astral crown at the upper left; a Viking ship at lower right; and a band of blue and white waves diagonally across the entre, on which is super- imposed the star of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a pair of upright swords forming the letter "A".

The colour and design of the shield, as well as the upright swords, are derived from the crest of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, signifying the command relationship. The NATO star is the symbol of the Alliance. The other elements are taken from the crests of the old commands that were combined to form Allied Forces Northwestern Europe: the astral crown from United Kingdom Air Forces; the Viking ship from Allied Forces Northern Europe, and the waves from Allied Command Channel.

NATO DEPLOYABLE CORPS GREECE  NATO KORPUS U GRČKOJ

Zafirios, thank you

The C' Army Corps (parent HQ of NDC - GR) is a historic Hellenic Army formation. It was first established in August 1913 in the city of Ioannina and in December 1913 moved its HQ to Thessaloniki. Since then it has successfully participated in all national campaigns, including WW I, WW II, etc. In recent times, C' Corps units have participated in NATO, UN and EU peace operations in the Balkans.

The Motto "to cut the Gordian knot" is a famous phrase of Alexander the Great. During his campaign against Persian Empire in 334 B.C., in the town of Gordion, there was an extremely complicated knot. The legend was that, whoever could untie the knot would become conquer of the entire known world. Alexander the Great cut the Gordian knot with his sword, facing with his own way the challenge. Respectively, the motto represents the strong will of the HQ to overcome every challenge will ever face. The Greek flag on the upper half of the emblem indicates the host nation of NDC - GR. The small emblem inside the cross of the Greek flag is part of the emblem of C' Corps, the parent HQ of NDC - GR. The NATO logo specifies that the HQ is under the operational command of SACEUR. The sarissa spear and the shield in the centre of the emblem signify the HQ' s location, since they are part of the heritage of the Macedonian dynasty who founded the city of Thessaloniki.
